Ashland, the Henry Clay Estate

Ashland, the home of famous 19th-century statesman Henry Clay, is located a short distance from downtown Lexington on a beautiful 20-acre wooded estate. Visiting Ashland, is like taking a step back in time. Allow at least an hour, but on a pretty day you'll want to take no less than two hours to see the house, visit the museum store, have lunch, and enjoy the serene and historic grounds and to stroll the formal garden. You won't want to miss lunch or tea in the pleasant surroundings of the Ginkgo Tree Cafe located on the brick patio surrounding the smokehouse. And, of course, the most important part of your visit is a guided tour of the 18 room mansion.

This magnificent two-story brick house is the centerpiece of the Henry Clay estate. Its status as a National Historic Landmark reflects the prominence of the great statesman who developed this beautiful property and resided here for more than forty years.

The Library is the most unique room in the house because of the octagonal plan and vaulted, domed ceiling. The two wings of the house, including this domed library, reportedly were designed by Benjamin Latrobe, the architect of the U.S. Capitol in Washington.
